WHY PORTRAITS

I love that when I make art about people I am able to tell a short story about them. In my unique way (artistic license is involved), I can describe what they look like, what they do, where they are, what they love (and other emotions), what they have, believe, or value, and who they are with.
TONS OF PHOTOGRAPHS
In my family, I am known for always having a camera (my cell phone camera counts) with me. Whenever I go anywhere, or when we are together, I cannot stop seeing different scenes in my head as they could be on paper or canvas. So, despite teasing, I take tons of reference pictures (I also want to remember the moments, too)!
MR. CHAN AND BLOSSOM
When I was in college, my youngest brother bought (rescued) Mr. Chan from a pet store. He was one of the absolute gentlest and sweetest souls our family has ever known. My mom fell IN LOVE with that pug. About a year later, she brought Blossom home. Blossom was beautiful, had attitude, and adored my mom (an her family) and Mr. Chan.
SHE PLAYS WITH HER PUGS (IN THE GARDEN)
I took the photo for this painting (quickly) on a summer morning in a garden area beside my childhood home. My mom was laughing and hugging Mr. Chan (who was in his usual spot beside her). Blossom was excitedly snorting (pug lovers will understand this) and "dancing" around my mom for her doll in this funny way she had of moving from paw to paw while wiggling her body and tail. The scene made me happy that day and tells a story about the relationship my mom always had with her pugs. Recently, I found the photograph again--in a box full of actual photographs. I remembered that morning with a smile and I knew I had to paint it--in watercolor.
